Wesolowski’s return was the perfect morale booster for City. It was known that manager Craig Levein had pencilled him in as a first team probable and the broken leg he sustained in a pre-season friendly with Celtic was a major setback.
The 18-year-old Australian midfielder returned for the closing quarter of the Watford game, replacing Muggleton, and, with the score 2-2, he saw midfielder Scott Lycett grab the winner for City from an Ashley Chambers corner.
According to the Official Leicester City website, Leicester had taken a first half lead through a wondrous volleyed goal by Louis Dodds.
Although Watford equalised, City restored their advantage when promising winger Levi Porter grabbed a close range goal just before the break.
Again Watford levelled but Wesolowski was finally introduced and proved the herald of victory as Leicester’s young protiges produced some of their best football this season according to Academy director Jon Rudkin.
The under 18’s had unexpectedly lost their previous match, in the FA Youth Cup against Huddersfield, but today’s game marked their first competitive action of the new year and a victory – by anyone and again anyone – was just the boost to morale needed in the City camp.
It also demonstrated that, when City have their big guns available for youth team duty they are a challenge for anyone.
The result ended a run of three successive defeats and was revenge for a 1-0 home defeat earlier in the season.
It took them clear of Watford in the FA Premier Academy League table and maintained their excellent chance of finishing runners-up behind likely winners Aston Villa.
Tottenham and Coventry are their rivals in what is a neck-and-neck race but City do have a game in hand on the Sky Blues.
