Sven To Focus On Defence

Sven-Goran Eriksson has highlighted the need to improve our defensive record next season as we target promotion to the Premier League.

Speaking to lcfc.com the manager said that we had conceded way too many goals this campaign, and it was one area we needed to seriously improve on if we are to achieve the aim of getting top flight football.

‘We conceded too many goals, made too many mistakes and I mean the whole team. We lost games against teams we should not have lost against, and most of those games were down to silly mistakes.’

It’s puts everything into perspective when you look at the stats, only four clubs outscored us in 2010-11, yet only the bottom four conceded more than we did.

That’s a huge imbalance, and over the course of the season tots up to many a wasted point.

The transfer links at the moment seem to focus on midfielders and Emile Heskey, so whether Sven is hoping another years experience will help as he does reference the loan players having greater experience now, or whether he plans on overhauling the back line remains to be seen.

Additions would be a good idea, but from what I’ve seen of your boys this season, I think Sven could probably do with just sticking with a back four combination for a few games and giving them a chance to settle. There’s already some decent players in there – certainly Bamba’s been a revelation and you’d be onto a good one if you could keep Naughton – but it’s not surprising that they’re leaking goals if they aren’t given a chance for cohesion. I wonder if Tunchev will ever really get a look in?…

There’s certainly a lot to be said for consistency and players being able to play often enough to develop a proper understanding with each other. Tunchev will get the pre season to impress, down to him to work his way into Sven’s plans really. Having the money to ‘risk’ on new players is nice in one way, but it does hold you back on other players getting the chance of a run to impress when you are sure they will have something to offer.
