Leicester City are top of the League

As we enter the next two weeks without any League football, it gives us the chance to reflect on Leicester’s league season so far.

It’s been an eventful start to the season for Leicester, on and off the field. In the first of a series of articles intended to fill the void during the internationals, we look at one of the positives to come from our start to the League.

Leicester’s Defensive record

Believe it or not, Leicester currently have the best defensive in The Championship, statistically speaking at least.

In our 9 League games so far, City have conceded just 8 goals, fewer than 1 a game. This places us at the top of the defensive league which currently looks like:

Team Goals conceded at Home Goals conceded Away Total
Leicester 4 4 8
Wolves 4 5 9
Watford 4 6 10
Charlton 4 6 10
Stoke 4 6 10
Norwich 4 6 10
Bristol City 6 4 10

With the exception of Norwich, all the other teams have played a game more, but let’s not forget we also kept a clean sheet against premiership side Villa.

Key to our excellent defensive record, I feel, is loanee goalkeeper Marton Fulop.

Marton Fulop

With Roy Keane spending £9M on Gordon, Fulop is surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light and with a rumoured option to make the deal permanent for less than £1M, surely he should become Megson’s first transfer when the window opens.

Fulop has came in and earned himself a move with a series of good performances and great saves. Not since Elvis Hammond has a player on loan made such a good case for a permanent move, oh wait…..

Megson and 5-3-2

New manager Gary Megson can claim some credit for this record. From early on in his reign as City boss, Megson was appalled by some of our defending. This culminated in changing to 5-3-2 for the second half of the Charlton match.

Since changing to a 5-3-2 for that game we have conceded just a single goal, against Stoke in 4 and half games, including the cup tie against Villa.

Have your say!

What do you think to our defensive performances this season?

Are we playing too defensively?

Do you mind watching games like Wolves(H) if we get the point(s)?
