Distant fans who know Leicester City’s new loan signing Andy Welsh believe the winger will prove a good signing for the club.

Indeed, stalwart Stockport County supporter Andy said: ‘He was ‘given away to Sunderland for £15,000 at a time when ex-owner Brian Kennedy was looking to get his money back out of the club.

‘He was a local Manchester lad who was certainly lively if phyically a bit lightweight for the rough and tumble of Division Two football.’

Sunderland fan Lanchester Red and White had no doubts saying: ‘He will be a good signing.

‘We signed him from Stockport reserves 18 months ago. He played a few times in the Championship winning season for us and did well.

He is a skillful, orthodox left winger who likes to beat a man, and try to get crosses in. He gets into a fair share of goalscoring positions too.

He is a confidence player, who sometimes over-elaborates, and he can be inconsistent, but at Championship level he will do a good job.

This season due to injuries he ended up playing more games than he was ready for in the Premiership.

‘He started brightly, faded badly, and hasn’t been seen since before Christmas.

‘Hopefully he will do well for you, and come back next season to us.’

Sadly, despite the positions he takes up, Welsh is not noted as a goalscorer recording just seven goals in 66 League and Cup appearances at Stockport, Macclesfield and Sunderland.

Although signed until the end of the season, under the terms of his loan Sunderland are entitled to recall him anytime after 28 days.

Could I just add that he wasn’t signed from Stockport Reserves. He was signed from the first team!
