Campbell included in Slovenia squad

Leicester City manager Paulo Sousa has included wantaway striker DJ Campbell in his pre-season squad for the team’s training camp in Slovenia.

The squad will prepare for the new season in Eastern Europe for the next few days, where they intend to set up practice matches against local opposition.

And Sousa has chosen to name Campbell in his 23-man squad for the trip, a suggestion that there could be a fresh beginning on the horizon for the frustrated forward.

Campbell is currently one of City’s highest wage-earners, but has never properly found his feet at the Walkers Stadium.

Successful loan moves at Derby and particularly Blackpool have seen the striker linked with several moves away from the club, but his wages have always proved a significant stumbling block.

Newly promoted Blackpool were keen to bring Campbell to Bloomfield Road this summer, but baulked at City’s £1.5 million valuation of the player.

Ipswich Town and Preston have both shown reported interest in the 28-year-old, but as of yet nothing concrete has been put forward.

But with a new manager comes fresh beginnings.

Sousa has already stated that every player has a clean slate, and Campbell is no exception.

Fans of the club are currently divided on the matter, with a split decision between keeping the man who helped fire Blackpool to the Premier League or offloading the same overpaid star who has never made in in a Leicester shirt.

Meanwhile also making the trip are new signings Tom Kennedy and Miguel Vitor, as well as youth academy prospects Robert Ambrusics, Jorrin John, Jeffrey Schlupp and Tom Parkes.
