Winning habit spreads at City

Results at Leicester City since Rob Kelly and co took over the managerial reins are starting to border on the extraordinary – for the club as a whole not just the first team.

Keen fans realise that the once malfunctioning and relegation threatened first team have won five, drawn two and lost one League match under the new regime.

But the Reserves win at Fulham tonight took them to three wins, two draws and a defeat in the last six and a glance at the Academy Under 18’s return shows five wins and a draw in six.

What makes the results even more significant is that there was no sign of these sorts of sequences earlier in the season.

Nor is it just winning. Leicester are starting to score more goals.

The first team have scored two goals or more in five of their last eight games, much better than previously.

With the Reserves it is 14 in six matches and two or more in five of them. The Academy has almost kept up with 11 goals in six.

Only the Academy team which started well enough with four wins and two defeats in their first six has previously had a genuinely successful run this season.

Much of the success may be down to what Reserves coach Steve Beaglehole described as the ‘real feeling of unity’ which now runs through the club.

Indeed with so many players and staff mentioning the atmosphere and spirit within the playing side of the club it surely makes a complete nonsense of any suggestion that the board would even consider alternative management come the summer.

Where, one asks, will they get a management team to preside over a combined total of 13 wins, five draws and two defeats from 20 games at various levels?

Or put another way a combined return of 44 points from a possible 60, or more than two points a game for close on two months.

Such returns might be anticipated at places like Chelsea or Arsenal with all their resources but not at the likes of Leicester, certainly not recently.

The spirit and sense of direction among the players at City is becoming tangible. Let’s hope nothing is allowed to happen which prevents that continuing.
