When Rob Kelly does a job…

When Rob Kelly answered an SOS and took over as Leicester City manager some fans felt the Board had left it too late to save us from relegation.

A remarkable nine League games later and with seven still to play, you could say it’s ‘Job Done’ and he can nip home to put his feet up.

Leicester’s 1-0 win at Millwall, their first in nearly 37 years, has lifted them 13 points clear of the relegation zone they occupied when Kelly began his own version of ‘The Great Escape’ close to two months ago.

With the extra point their goal difference effectively provides that is 14 points – or four wins and two draws – which our relegation rivals now have to gain on us.

It also means Leicester have 46 points, or as many points as there are games in the season, and only a pessimist will believe that any team this year will go down with such a total.

Kelly would never say that, and he’s right.

It just isn’t in his nature to take his mind off the job he was ‘charged to do’ until success has been irrevocably achieved.

But few City fans would ever have imagined in those miserable January days leading up to Levein’s departure that they would be able to relax with seven games still to play?

After all it had taken 30 games for us to reach 26 points when Levein left. The way we were playing, getting 20 points in the remainding 16 games of the season was a challenging enough target with the run-in we faced.

What has happened since deserves a special chapter in City folklore. Victories at places like QPR, Luton and Millwall when we’d previously won one away game all season? Who would have pencilled those in?
