Whatever will be will be…

We all know how the song goes, but how many of us actually thought we’d have a shot at Wembley glory at the beginning of the season?

A handful of optimists is the most likely answer. Most of us would have been content with a top-half finish or even a season of safety and consolidation, but as usual those boys in Blue have surprised us all once again.

Only this time, rather than pile a summer of misery on us for the umpteenth time it is quite the opposite. The season is far from over as we embark on a play-off challenge that could well end in spectacularly unexpected results.

Say it very quietly, but we are now potentially four matches away from a return to the Premier League. Bitter memories of relegation to League One at Stoke City have been all but banished, even embraced by some.

One step backwards to go two forwards and all that. It isn’t difficult to realise that this has definitely been the case with ourselves, so for the first time I’d actually quite like to give thanks to Ian Holloway for his incompetence. It’s much appreciated, honest.

Ironically it could be Holloway’s Blackpool who will join City in the play-offs this year as they currently occupy the final position after ousting Swansea from the prized spot at the weekend. Complete of course with in-form striker DJ Campbell, who could potentially propell the Seasiders past Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals should things work out that way.

Back to matters on ourselves, regardless of events in the coming month it will have been an incredible season. The mere mention of the top six would have raised serious eyebrows of the realists among us, but to give credit where it is due we have been there seemingly from the word go. This consistency should not be underestimated either – going into the play-offs on good form is vital.

So this is a call to the Walkers faithful come May 9th – whatever happens, do not boo the players off the pitch like fickle-minded morons should we not get the result we need. What Pearson and his side have done this season is brought back the smiles many of us had forgotten to use whilst watching Leicester City over the last six seasons.

Building on top of successes last year, for the first time in far too long we finally have a team to be proud of.
