Leicester eased past Macclesfield Town with a 2-0 win in the first round of the League cup.

A goal from Chris O`Grady in the first half and a goal from Paddy McCarthy in the 90th minute, finished off the tie and rounded off a good performance from Leicester.

Leicester fans will be happy that a potential banana skin has been avoided and that City will go into the next round. Although Leicester put in a solid performance the game did have long periods where nothing seemed to happen.

The first half was plodding along with relatively few chances before O`Grady popped up to score only his second goal for the first team. O`Grady hit a low drive from the edge of the box, leaving the Macclesfield keeper no chace. O’Grady’s goal was set up after a good pass from Levi Porter.

The second half did not see much action with Leicester happy to hold onto the ball and play down the clock. It was only in the last ten minutes that Leicester started to create a few chances.

Somehow Levi Porter managed to win a header in the area, but his effort went over the bar. Alan Maybury had a chance when he was only 6 yards out but seemed to take too long on the ball and the chance was wasted.

Finally in the last minute of normal time Paddy McCarthy sealed the game for Leicester. A deep corner from Gareth Williams found McCarthy at the back post and he headed in to put Leicester through to the next round.

Although Leicester controlled the game, Macclesfield Town should take some positives from the game. Their defence seemed to handle a fairly strong Leicester team for long periods and if they show the same commitment in the league, it won`t be long until they get their first win of the season.
