Manager Nigel Pearson has confirmed that defender Ritchie De Laet could well now be out for over a month after picking up an infection in his leg.

The 24 year old underwent surgery on his tibia recently, and missed the game against Huddersfield Town, but speaking to the BBC, the gaffer explained that it could have been a lot worse for the player.

‘A simple knock on it and he could have been out for the rest of the season.’

Pearson adds the priority of obviously the health and wellbeing of the players at the club, and although he’s now on the road to recovery and the infection is being treated, he will miss at least the next month as the club have no intention of trying to rush him back and run the risk of further complications.

De Laet will be a loss having already turned out for us twelve times so far this season.

Hopefully there won’t be complications though and he’ll be back soon enough fit and raring to go again.
