Two first half goals gave Leicester City victory in their match over Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.

Goals from defenders Gareth McAuley and an own goal from Akpo Sodje meant that Leicester achieved their first victory in the League under new manager Gary Megson.

Megson made two changes from the side after their 0-0 draw with Wolves, Shaun Newton and Alan Sheehan coming into the side for Kishishev and the injured Mattock.

Andy King, who made his debut against Wolves, kept his place in the centre of midfield with Richard Stearman joining him and Chambers allowing Newton to occupy the right wing position.

The match was played between two clubs at the bottom of the division and the loser would find themselves going into the international break in the relegation zone.

The first chance of the match fell to Deon Burton after Bruno N’Gotty had put goalkeeper Fulop in trouble with a difficult backpass, Fulop’s clearance came back off Burton but went safely behind for a goal kick.

Leicester then scored the first of two goals in 7 minutes that would decide the tie. Alan Sheehan swung in a corner from the right which McAuley met at the far post to give Leicester the lead.

Burton had the chance to equalise almost immediately after but his follow up from Kavanagh’s blocked shot was wide.

Leicester doubled their advantage when another Sheehan corner was punched by Wednesday keeper Grant into Sodje, and into the net for an own goal.

After Leicester had scored their second it was one way traffic for the remainder of the first half, Hume coming close with an overhead kick before Newton had his goal disallowed for offside. Leicester continued to press but were unable to increase their advantage going into half-time.

The start of the second half saw Wednesday start to coming into the game more, but they failed to really test Fulop . On the hour Leicester changed their front line with Campbell and Cort replacing Hume and Fryatt.

Fulop was finally called into action late on making good saves from O’Brien and later Tudgay to preserve his 3rd clean sheet in 4 outings.

And so the game finished 2-0, two set pieces proving the difference.

Fulop’s superb form behind the Leicester defence means that City have the best defensive record in the League and that win will give the team a much needed confidence boost going into the international break.

The win takes City up to 18th with 11 points from 9, 5 points off the playoff spots with a game in hand.
