Pleasure & Disappointment for Pearson

A bit of a mixed bag for our gaffer tonight because he knows there were plenty of positives to take out of the game, but he also knows at points we could’ve done better.

City obviously dominated chances and had more possession and nobody can begrudge them the lead they took or the ultimate win, but from our side it was good to see the players respond to going behind, and whilst it may only have been a token consolation, reducing the victory to a two goal margin shouldn’t be sniffed at.

Speaking to lcfc.com following the three one defeat in the Capital One Cup quarter final, Pearson was a bit mixed because he knows we can do better when it comes to the goals we conceded, but equally there is no doubting the quality of the City side.

‘We were beaten by a very good side, but we were punished severely for one or two mistakes. I would have liked us to have kept it a bit tighter for longer. The players deserve credit for trying to put them under pressure and it would’ve been easy to allow a side of their quality to totally dominate, but we know we probably didn’t give ourselves the best chance tonight.’

Pearson goes on to say that maybe when watching the game the quality on show, simply from the simple nature of the basic elements of the game and the how quickly a side can ramp it up or open a team up from the unexpected, can be missed and on that score he doesn’t feel we showed them too much respect on the night, but we just couldn’t muster the pressure we would normally expect to be able to against an opponent – which again goes to the quality of their team in depth.

Plenty to learn, plenty of positives yes, but again Pearson keeps coming back to commenting that we could’ve done better, we did make mistakes and his overall disappointment at going our of the competition – but equally being proud we got this far.

The gaffer also adds that he feels the goal will be good for the team as it was a just reward for their efforts on the night, even though it didn’t really change anything, and it’s scant consolation for him.
