Newcastle are planning an approach for Leicester City coach Chris Powell, according to sources.

Newly appointed Magpies manager Alan Pardew wants Powell to add to his backroom staff, having previously worked with the 41-year-old during their days at Charlton Athletic.

Powell signed a new contract with the Foxes shortly after Nigel Pearson’s departure to Hull City, and is a huge favourite among both players and fans.

Sven-Goran Eriksson is also believed to be a huge admirer of Powell’s, but the lure of Premier League football with Newcastle could be too difficult to resist.

Powell, together with goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell, took charge of City’s league win over Scunthorpe back in October, and was seen sprinting down the touchline to celebrate with the rest of the players for the Foxes’ third goal.

And Leicester will be praying that Powell is happy to continue his coaching development at the Walkers Stadium, where he currently resides over reserve team matters.
