Kirkland makes Foxes switch

Sven-Goran Eriksson has moved to make Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland his sixth loan signing for the club.

The Barwell-born shot stopper has joined the Foxes until January after finding himself out of favour at the DW Stadium this season, falling behind Ali Al-Habsi in Roberto Martinez’s pecking order.

Kirkland began his career with local rivals Coventry, where his performances attracted the attentions of Liverpool who paid a then-record £6m for the young goalkeeper.

Injuries have plagued the career of the 29-year-old to date, and loan moves at West Brom and Wigan followed his Anfield stay before making his switch to the latter permanent in 2006.

Kirkland has one England cap to his name – handed to him by Steve McLaren – and looks like a welcome addition to the Leicester side as they continue their push for the play-offs.

Current number one Chris Weale has endured a difficult time of late after a superb campaign last year, but now finds his place in the side under significant threat from Leicester’s latest high-profile capture.
