Bristol City 1-1 Leicester City

Lloyd Dyer rescued a point for Leicester as they shared the spoils with Bristol City in a 1-1 draw.

Dyer struck just seconds after Bristol City scored what seemed to be a last minute winner through David Clarkson. But Leicester’s resolve shone through, as they came away from Ashton Gate with a deserved point.

Nigel Pearson kept faith with the same side who thrashed Scunthorpe United 5-1, but the team failed to rekindle the dominance and free-scoring ability they showed on Saturday.

In a low key first period, neither side created many chances. Leicester came closest early into the game, with Martyn Waghorn finding space and shooting, but the ball was scrambled away for a corner.

From the resulting set-piece a goalmouth scramble ensued, but Bristol City somehow managed to clear their lines when it looked a certain goal.

The first 45 minutes were in stark contrast to Leicester’s last game, but the home side pressured and closed down much quicker, and the Foxes didn’t seem to have the cutting edge to break the defence down.

The second half was a much livelier affair, with both teams attacking with a lot more intent, though like the first period, chances were at a premium.

The majority of the pressure came from the home side, who pinned Leicester in their own half for long spells, and had much of their success down the right-hand side, exploiting the earlier booked and exhausted Bruno Berner.

But it was the visitors who could and should have taken the lead. Fantastic work down the right hand side by Waghorn allowed the striker to find Matt Oakley, whose resulting effort beat Dean Gherken but not the post, a narrow escape for the Robins.

Leicester came close twice in a short space of time. Left back Bruno Berner stretched himself to get down the wing and deliver a dangerous ball, only to find there was no-one to put the ball home. Seconds later Berner repeated his trick, but again a lack of bodies inside the box cost the Foxes dearly.

From then on the home team had the best of the match, coming close on several occasions. On-loan striker Chris Iwelumo nipped in ahead of Weale to head the ball into a gaping net, but his effort fell safe.

Wayne Brown had to be alert to clear off the line in Bristol’s best chance in the 90 minutes, as Leicester began to sit further back and invite pressure.

As the fourth official signalled for five minutes of injury time, Bristol City struck what appeared to be the hammer blow to Leicester. A bobbling ball inside the area eventually fell to David Clarkson, whose shot hit the far corner of the net to break Leicester fans’ hearts.

Any visiting supporters leaving early would have missed a grandstand finish, as within a minute later a long ball pumped upfield was flicked on by Yann Kermogant, with Lloyd Dyer finding himself some space to finish into the far corner to set up wild celebrations tinged with relief.

Leicester next move onto struggling Plymouth, knowing that three points against a team in their position are vital if they are to have a chance of cementing and keeping their place in the play-offs.
