Yak becomes a Fox

Leicester have completed the loan signing of Everton striker Yakubu until the end of the season.

Foxes chief Sven-Goran Eriksson had been tracking the Nigeria international to bolster his forward line, and finally landed his man today.

Yakubu has found himself out-of-favour at Goodison Park since an eight-month lay-off with an Achilles injury over 2008 and 2009.

Everton manager David Moyes was keen to free up funds to bring in a striker of his own to the club, and has subsequently allowed Yakubu to join the Foxes with a view to a permanent deal.

The striker said: “I’m ambitious and want to be in the Premier League. Leicester are a big club with a big manager. Hopefully we can get there next season.”

The transfer, which represents something of a coup for Leicester, was greeted by delight from manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

“Yakubu is a tremendous signing for Leicester City. He will bring pace, power and experience to the club,” he said.

“He has captained his country, played in major competitions and is a first-class footballer, who I am certain will help us to achieve our aims of moving up the Championship.”

Yakubu should be involved with the Foxes’ trip to Preston on Saturday.
