Words sound grim for City manager

No-one could doubt it – Leicester City manager Craig Levein is living on borrowed time.

That’s the only conclusion to be drawn from the closing remarks of an excellent pre-match interview by BBC Radio Leicester’s Chris Edgerton and City Chief Executive Tim Davies.

Forced into a corner by the interviewer when he asked ‘Do you think (Levein’s) job is safe’, Davies retaliated by asking, ‘would you sack Levein, yes or no?’

Edgerton squirmed noticably when being made to feel how Davies felt when being pushed to answer diiplomatically loaded questions like that and tried to avoid answering directly.

He sidestepped Davies’ repeated challenge by changing the focus to the fans opinion that what was happening to Leicester was not acceptable and Davies finally admitted it was ‘not acceptable’ to him either.

Davies also significantly refused to say whether Levein would be given any more money to spend in the transfer window, a perhaps significant pointer towards the importance of today’s game to Levein’s managerial future.

But when challenged by Edgerton that this ‘sounds like a Vote of Confidence’ situation, Davies insisted he never goes down that route and didn’t want to go there now even though City’s position was terrible.

Earlier Davies had made it pointedly clear that ‘What we have got to avoid AT ALL COSTS is relegation’.

He gave the clear impression that the Leicester board were not inclined to wait much longer for any progress to be made in that direction.

The above firmly focuses attention on the City board meeting tomorrow which is categorically ‘not’ an emergency meeting but is one which a Foxes Trust spokesman on Foxestalk website says is ‘not the normal format’.

It will in fact discuss City’s ‘performance and Craig Levein’s solutions including squad changes during the transfer window.’

Sounds like a lot of potential fluidity in that agenda.

It’s Catch-22. Heads you pay out on Craig and hope you find the right alternative. Tails you stick with Craig, pour some money into his chosen players and then, if it doesn’t work have to absorb the costs of going down. Yuk. Not very easy.
