The loan future of Leicester City’s on-loan Sunderland striker Martyn Waghorn has been cast into doubt, after local reports suggest that Steve Bruce may want him on Wearside.

Waghorn has been a popular figure amongst both management and fans of the club since his loan switch from the Premier League side, with four goals to his name so far this campaign for the Foxes.

The 19-year-old has held down a first team place for the past five matches, repaying Nigel Pearson’s faith with two vital goals against Reading and Scunthorpe in this spell.

Whilst Pearson would unquestionably like to extend Waghorn’s loan past the initial January deadline, Bruce may have other plans for his young forward at Sunderland.

Reports in the Leicester Mercury suggest that the Black Cats manager is ready to hand Waghorn his opportunity to impress in the North-East, providing competition for Darren Bent, Kenwyne Jones and Fraizer Campbell in his first team squad.

The player has previously admitted that he would not turn down the opportunity to remain with the Foxes should the two clubs form a formal agreement.
