Leicester City fans appear to be looking to one man, in particular, to step up following a recent midfield injury blow for Claude Puel.
Speaking to lcfc.com as he met with the media to preview the upcoming game against Newcastle United, Puel confirmed that it was again season over for Matty James as he has now undergone surgery on an Achilles tendon.
The midfielder hasn’t featured for the club since the one all draw with Bournemouth at the beginning of March and having undergone surgery on the problem, he now begins his rehabilitation work ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Wilfred Ndidi is unavailable following his sending off against Brighton, but Daniel Amartey is set to return to training next week.
In the meantime it’s all eyes to Adrien Silva to really step up.
‘Daniel Amartey will come back with the team in the training session next week. For Matty James, he has had surgery on Tuesday on his Achilles tendon and he will not be available until the end of the season. He will be ready for the next season. Of course, it`s difficult but it`s a good thing because he knows what his problem is. It`s not a big problem but now he needs patience and a good recovery. He will be ready for next season.’
In terms of options for Newcastle, Puel went on to say three players in particular were in his head.
‘We have three solutions with Vicente Iborra, Adrien Silva and Hamza Choudhury also available so we will see for Saturday our midfield. It`s different attributes than Wilfred and we have to find the solution to give a collective response. Wilfred has attributes to recover a lot of balls, he`s strong in midfield and we cannot replace him with the same attributes but we can replace him with a collective response by sharing this part of the job between all the players.’
Certainly wouldn’t be bad to see a little bit more of Choudhury following his debut earlier in the season, but Iborra or Silva you’d expect to take centre stage during the run in.
Good player for squad depth, but Puel likes to put him in the starting eleven often. With his injury and Ndidi suspended hopefully Silva gets a good run of games.
