Leicester City manager has admitted it was a difficult situation for Riyad Mahrez with Manchester City refusing to meet our valuation of the player today, but he’s vowed to help the Algerian ‘come back with a smile’ following another failed transfer and a failed transfer request.

Manchester City walked away as the overall transfer package was said to be £95million and Pep Guardiola simply wouldn’t sanction that.

The BBC quote Puel as saying tonight – Mahrez did miss the game against Everton.

‘It was a difficult situation for Riyad. I hope he can come back with a smile and with desire and happy to play with his team-mates. There is perhaps disappointment for Riyad but I think all the players, all the squad will help him to come back.’

With reports that Mahrez didn’t train on Tuesday, Puel continued to simply say.

‘For some days it will be tough but it’s important he stays with us and I hope he can come back with all his quality and the fantastic player he is.

It’s believed in an effort to get the deal sanctioned City suggested a cash plus player arrangement but were unwilling to go above £60million in cash spend and that wasn’t acceptable to the club and speaking following their victory over West Brom, Guardiola confirmed he had been in for the player with an indication he would try again next summer.

‘The clubs and the managers of the players decide they want more. After that, the deal is done sometimes, other times not. If not, it is not a problem. I admire the club for having parameters because they would be broke. Maybe in the future we are able to buy one player for £100m or something like that. Maybe it is going to happen. But if it happens it will be for a special, special player. At the moment we cannot afford that.’

City obviously pulled out of a deal for Alexis Sanchez on the same basis.
