Speculation about Leicester City’s Demarai Gray exploded as Monday ticked by with reports linking him to Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton this summer.

The Mirror seemed to start the baseless suggestions by linking him to the above mentioned clubs and there were talks of a release clause that would see former club Birmingham City net a windfall in the back of the future sale fee they hold on the deal.

They claimed that the player was becoming concerned with his starting opportunities as 15 of his 21 Premier League appearances this year have been as a substitute and citing a release fee existed, they said it stood at £12million – so a significant uplift on the £3.75million we paid for him.

With the Mirror using the tried and tested ‘believe’ statement to get round the requirement for any proof whatsoever, the Leicester Mercury were quick to do their own ‘understands’ piece, completely rubbishing suggestions that a release fee was involved in his deal and stating that Leicester were completely in control on that front.

Gray still has three years left on his original deal and as the Mercury point out, he has eleven starts to his name across all competitions this season with 16 appearances from the bench.

But of course with a disappointing season, we can expect plenty more player speculation in the coming weeks as we have just again had Riyad Mahrez to Barcelona rehashes.
