Leicester City manager Claude Puel had the perfect response to Riyad Mahrez being at Arsenal this week for their League Cup tie against Chelsea.

Apparently he’d travelled to the Emirates Stadium along with Islam Slimani to scout Arsene Wenger’s side for him as the Frenchman was too busy himself to go.

With the internet (predictably) going into meltdown and the tabloids falling over each other to speak about Mahrez in particular being in attendance for the game, the obvious questions came up when Puel met with the press this week.

Sky Sports quote the Frenchman as laughing off the talk, saying.

‘I asked Mahrez and Slimani to watch the game between Chelsea and Arsenal to make a report. They are good scouts! There is nothing to say about Riyad or Slimani. I think it’s a good thing if there’s some noise about them because it shows they are good players and shows the quality of the team. The transfer window is a period with speculation. We have to manage this period with calm. At the end of January we will be happy.’

Mahrez has been linked with Arsenal for a while now without anything actually coming of it, but it does make a change from this month’s endless speculation suggesting he’s signed 3-4 or four different deals with Liverpool this window.

Slimani’s future is also the subject of speculation this month with him heavily linked to a move to Besiktas.

Asked about future incomings with only Fousseni Diabate being added and the expectation he was one of the future, Puel added.

‘It would be interesting to strengthen the team if we can but if it’s not possible for different reasons I am happy with this squad. I will continue to develop these players. It’s not a problem for me.’
