Doncaster Rovers midfielder Richie Wellens has put pen to paper on a three-year contract at Leicester City in a deal worth around £1.2m according to local radio.

Wellens becomes Nigel Pearson’s seventh signing of the summer, following the permanent arrivals of Wayne Brown, Jack Hobbs, Robbie Neilson, Chris Weale, Dany N’Guessan and Astrit Ajdarevic.

Last night we informed you that Wellens had passed a medical with the club earlier in the day, but the transfer fee appears to be significantly lower than we had expected.

An official statement on the Doncaster Rovers official website said: “Though we are sorry to lose Richie, we understand that at the age of 29, the player has to capitalise on the remaining years of his career, with this possibly being his last chance to ensure security for himself and his family.

With Richie being 30 years of age in March next season, he made it clear that Leicester City had made him a offer he could not turn down”.

Wellens joined Rovers in 2007 from Oldham Athletic, after beginning his professional career at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, where he was later allowed to leave for Blackpool.
