Is Kelly the right man?

Rob Kelly has been in charge of Leicester for over a year now and the fans are still split on whether he was the right choice. Some believe that he has done well with the resources he has been given, others think City have not progressed enough under him.

When Kelly took over Leicester were in the relegation zone and seemingly on a downward spiral. However, he got them out of the relegation zone and by the end of the season they were up to mid table respectability.

This season City have continued to flirt with the relegation zone and have struggled to put together a run of form. This has led to fans becoming disgruntled by this seemingly lack of progress.

With the arrival of Milan Mandaric, those fans that are starting to turn against Kelly might get their wish of a new manager. Kelly will now be under pressure to consistently pick up wins, starting with the game at home to Coventry tomorrow.

However, those fans that are turning against Kelly should look back at the team that played Coventry at the Walkers Stadium last season, to see how far City have come.

The starting eleven was Douglas, Stearman, McCarthy, Dublin, Johansson, Sylla, Gudjonsson, Kisnorbo, Hamil, Hume and De Vries. From this team there are only 5 players that are currently playing for City. Of these 5, Stearman is currently only a bit part player and Kisnorbo`s form has taken a dramatic U-turn (since Kelly moved him into defence). This means that there are only 3 players from the game last season that are still in the starting eleven this season.

Nearly all City fans will agree that Dublin, Sylla, and Hamil all needed to go and the only reason Douglas and De Vries are still at the club is due to their large contracts.

To add to this, not only has Kelly got rid of these players, he has arguably brought in better replacements such as McAuley for Dublin, Yeates for Sylla, Wesoloski for Gudjonsson, Johnson for Kisnorbo and Horsfield for De Vries. All of this has happened with hardly any money being available for Kelly to spend.

Only time will tell if Mandaric will stick with Kelly, but after working under such tight restrictions maybe Kelly should be given some money and time to prove he can get City up the table.

The team that played Cov last year might be very different but the league position isn’t. Look at Derby County, they’ve recently brought a few players in but did very well even before that without splashing the cash. Cardiff City also are a good example. Motivation is the key, making good players out of average ones, like Savage, Matt Elliott, Muzzy Izzit, Neil Lennon. That”s what’s needed when there isn’t much money. Also, what a mistake that Josh Lowe was and why not play Cadamarteri a little more often, otherwise, why sign him in the first place?
