Fryatt linked with Latics

Leicester City striker Matty Fryatt has been linked with a possible £3m switch to Premier League side Wigan Athletic.

Reports from the Daily Mirror and the Sun from Sunday onwards have suggested that Roberto Martinez could make his move for Fryatt, who is Leicester’s top-scorer this season with 12 goals.

Martinez played with Fryatt during his playing career at Walsall, and is thought to be a keen admirer of the man who found the net 32 times last year in League One.

A bid of that magnitude would test chairman Milan Mandaric, who knows that Fryatt is key to any kind of promotion hopes for the season.

Fryatt signed a three-and-a-half year deal with City back in December 2008, and Leicester fans will be hoping that their star man keeps faith with the club to help their promotion push this season.

The situation is similar to that of David Connolly, who left the Foxes in 2005 for the Latics for around £3m. Connolly failed to live up to expectations at Wigan, almost disappearing into obscurity, and now plies his trade at Southampton in League One.

Manager Nigel Pearson would almost undoubtedly choose the player over the money in this situation, and would be extremely reluctant to losing his key man up front.
