Doncaster 0-1 Leicester

An early goal from Martyn Waghorn ensured Leicester extended their unbeaten run to seven games, after a hard-fought victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Waghorn struck after 12 minutes to give the Foxes all three points in a game where the away side defended for a large portion of the second half in shades of the performances against Blackpool, Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle.

After a relentless run of Saturday-Tuesday matches stretching back to February 6th, Leicester came out looking bright and fresh. Manager Nigel Pearson freshened the side up, bringing in Dany N`Guessan and Nolberto Solano in place of skipper Matt Oakley and Paul Gallagher.

City`s early dominance produced a string of early corners, and Lloyd Dyer had a chance to give Leicester the lead. A superb run into the box was greeted with a sublime pass from Solano, but he could only shoot with his weaker right foot, giving Neil Sullivan an easy save with his legs.

But it was a Doncaster attack which led to the opening goal. Leicester countered from a Rovers corner; a long ball hoofed up field by Chris Weale bounced nicely for Waghorn, who shrugged off the defender and found himself one-on-one with Sullivan, eventually crashing the ball into the net past the former Scottish international.

City seemed to slack off after the goal as Doncaster pressed for the equaliser, but Leicester`s defence, with special mention to the imperious Jack Hobbs, managed to repel all attacks after the opener.

The biggest scare of the night came when Bruno Berner was booked for bringing down Billy Sharp as The Vikings broke away from a corner. Rovers fans were not happy that Berner only saw yellow, though Richie Wellens, charging back to defend, justified the punishment only being a caution.

Wellens also went close for Leicester himself, but Sullivan saved easily. Andy King’s drive from the edge of the area was stopped, but either side of the keeper and it could have caused major problems.

After defending gallantly towards the end of the first half, it was a case of backs to the wall for Leicester in the second period, who stood off and let Doncaster come at them. Without any real threat being posed up front, Waghorn was becoming increasingly isolated.

However, for all their possession, Doncaster failed to severely test the Leicester goal. When they did, they found the inspired Weale in the way of everything that Doncaster could throw at him, stopping James Hayter`s shot early in the second half.

Weale`s best save of the night came from a clean break by Billy Sharp, who entered the penalty area only to find the exceptional Weale come running out to dive at the feet of the Doncaster striker and collect the ball.

A brilliant defence and an outstanding goalkeeper helped Leicester to a win which lifts the Foxes to fifth in the Championship table. With the huge home clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, a confidence boosting display and a clean sheet, the fans and the team will be confident of a win after stuttering away form from Forest, and a seven game unbeaten run for Leicester.
