There’s renewed optimism at Leicester City after the club signed Sunderland winger Andy Welsh on loan for the rest of the season.

Welsh, a Scotland Under 21 international, is regarded by many Wearside fans as one of the club’s best players and has made 15 appearances for the Black Cats this season.

He was a £15,000 signing from Stockport County where he made 81 first team appearances between 2001/2004.

Although considered primarily as a left-winger, 23-year-old Welsh can play on either flank.

He is fast and direct but not a prolific scorer and has only notched a couple of goals for Sunderland.

City manager Rob Kelly knew Welsh from his days at Stockport and told the official Leicester City website: ‘He’s got a good attitude and I am sure he will help us in the battle against relegation. As soon as we made our interest known he wanted to come here and that’s always pleasing.’
