City need more than a manager

Hopefully Leicester City’s Board members didn’t take today off. Because the club needs a deliverer now. Not just a manager but someone to deliver them from the spectre of footballing obscurity.

Taking time to make the right choice is hardly an option. It might have been had Levein been ousted when he should have been in December.

Now, Leicester City is like a virulent cancer patient. The treatment options are limited but whatever exists to offer any hope of survival in the Championship has to be effected now.

Logically, the City board would have thought about those options long and hard for the last few weeks.

They cannot afford to delay on their decision as they dallied on Levein’s dismissal.

Reportedly Levein survived a vote of confidence by just a single hand as much as a month before his eventual dismissal and those who backed him should have a lot on their conscience now.

In fact, considering the consequences, one wonders if they shouldn’t have done the honourable thing and followed Levein out of the door but, on balance they arguably did what they thought best and anyone can act in hindsight.

Now, to focus minds, consider the following…

Walsall, Scunthorpe, Port Vale, Rotherham, Hartlepool, Wycombe, Grimsby, Carlisle, Chesterfield, Yeovil, Tranmere.

Give or take one or two that is a sample of our prospective fixture list next season.

Even the most faithful fans are now faltering in the belief that the present team or the present philosophies can possibly offer hope of survival.

Loan reinforcements are desperately needed to strengthen the side and somehow the club has to turn defence into attack to escape the most embarrassing relegation in their history.

‘Getting something’ from QPR on Tuesday is not going to be good enough. What is wanted is a win and someone in charge with the courage and wisdom to go out and get one.

But have the Board had anyone breeze through their door to convince them he has the rare gift of oratory coupled with the necessary knowledge to re-inspire a squad whose confidence seems to have left them like the shell-shocked trench-troops of World War One?.

Reading through the records of leading applicants I doubt it. In the main they are steady eddies, or totally unproven and that’s not enough.

The job now doesn’t call for a brick-by-brick team-builder. It calls for a footballing messiah.

This is not building work it is a rescue mission.

And as with any rescue, time is of the essence.

The choice has to be an inspirational action man because, without inspiration and fast-action there is no chance City will get the 23 points from 16 games they will surely need to overcome this deadly threat to their footballing credibility, indeed their footballing future.

Is their any such man or men available and willing to try?
