Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has told midfielder Michael Johnson he is free to go out on loan, with Leicester believed to be the in chase for the youngster.

Johnson has been a reported target for Sven-Goran Eriksson for some time, but Mancini’s words may prompt the Swede to step up his attempts to sign the midfielder.

When asked who could be leaving the club in January, Mancini said: “Maybe Michael Johnson because I think that he needs to play.

“It is important for him, so if we have a chance, Michael Johnson (will go).”

Johnson has been plagued with injuries for the past two seasons at Eastlands, but was once touted as one of the country’s brightest prospects.

The 22-year-old had previously been linked with big-money moves to the likes of Newcastle, but his troublesome spell on the sidelines stunted any hopes of development.

Leeds are also thought to be in the chase for the midfielder according to Sky Sports, but a move to Elland Road may hinge on the future of Bradley Johnson.
