Gossip circulating around the Walkers today suggests Leicester City are set to offer managerial saviour Rob Kelly a new long term contract, possibly before the end of the week.

Three things have focused attention on the deal: the now certain escape from any threat of relegation, radio claims that Rob Kelly might not want the job and national newspaper speculation linking him to Wolves in the summer.

Only the escape from relegation has any substance.

Kelly in reality gives the impression he’d love the City managership permanently.

And not only is Glen Hoddle still on a rolling contract at Wolves but there has never been any indication that Kelly would even consider leaving the set-up he has been bulding at Leicester.

Under Kelly, a previously underperforming City team have collected 24 points from 12 League games and performed extraordinarily consistently.

Those same players put their heads above the parapet and called, singularly and collectively, for his appointment as Craig Levein’s managerial successor during caretaker days.

That, plus their focused and determined performances on the field have been largely responsible for lifting Kelly’s profile and starting to build his reputation as a manager.

It is hard to imagine he would easily walk out on that at such an early stage and after such an encouraging start.

Far more likely that someone has put two and two together – like Kelly’s strong connections with Wolves and the West Midlands plus his one-time job as an aspiring hack on the Wolverhampton Express and Star – and concluded that Kelly could find Molineux irresistible should Hoddle be ousted.

He might instead remember that when former Leicester manager Mark McGhee left Filbert Street for Wolves he subsequently disappeared into near oblivion for many years.

Is Kelly likely to make the same mistake?.

More likely he’ll relish the thoughts of building on the foundations he’s layed already at Leicester and repaying the efforts of his players by seeing if he can steer them into the Premiership.
