Crystal Palace manager George Burley has confirmed his interest in signing midfielder Matt Oakley.

Reports emerged yesterday of the Eagles’ interest in the 32-year-old, with Burley today confirming that the midfielder is a target this summer.

‘I’ve spoke to Leicester but nothing has been agreed,’ Burley told the South London Press.

‘He would give us something different. We’re looking to add to the squad and he is the right type of player.’

Oakley has fallen behind in the City pecking order with Richie Wellens and Andy King both favoured ahead of the former-Derby man, and first team opportunities may be limited next season.

With negotiations having seemingly begun between the two clubs, Oakley’s potential departure would almost certainly signal the arrival of fresh blood to the Walkers.

With currently little competition for central midfield berths, Oakley will not be allowed to leave without a replacement.

But high wages and superior options may tempt Sousa into offloading the experienced midfielder, who could, although unlikely, line up against City on the first match of the season should a deal be struck quickly.
