It was being reported yesterday that Leicester City were now close to the capture of Oxford United’s Michael Appleton.

It’s long been speculated that manager Craig Shakespeare had identified Appleton as his No 2 – they of course worked together on West Bromwich Albion’s coaching staff a number of years ago – and Sky Sports were reporting that a deal over compensation for their gaffer was now close.

Appleton joined Oxford back in the summer of 2014 and he achieved promotion to League One in his second year. The 41 year old has also managed at Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers, taking Oxford to the Football League Trophy final on two occasions.

The suggestion is that with a compensation package close to being agreed, he will be in position as Shakespeare assistant before the end of the week most likely.
